The three entries for John Inglis contain mixed elements of the careers of two officers of the same name. Both becoming Lieutenants at almost the same time and both resided in Edinburgh from the mid-1770s. At one point the Admiralty records note that they had confused the two officers (TNA ADM 1/1839). The career of John Inglis(2) is detailed in Jim Tildesley ‘I am Determined to Live or Die on Board My Ship: The Life of Admiral John Inglis. An American in the Georgian Navy’ (2019)
