The three entries for John Inglis contain mixed elements of the careers of two officers of the same name. Both becoming Lieutenants at almost the same time and both resided in Edinburgh from the mid-1770s. At one point the Admiralty records note that they had confused the two officers (TNA ADM 1/1839). September 1757 – March 1758 - HMS Hussar (6th Rate): Master’s Mate.
26th October 1758 – January 1759 - HMS Hussar (6th Rate): AB
January 1759 – May 1761- HMS Aeolus (5th Rate): AB & Midshipman.
1st May 1761 – Passes Lieutenants Exam.
May 1761 – February 1764 - HMS Chichester (3rd Rate): Midshipman, 4th Lieutenant - October 1761, 3rd Lieutenant, February 1762 – HMS Chichester:
July 1768 – December 1772– HMS Sultana (Schooner): Lieutenant and Commanding Officer.
