Hi
You are probably correct. The last data I have on him is a commission by Rodney on 14th June 1772 to be 4th Lieut. of the Modest which paid off on 16th Oct 1772.

You have quoted the HPO which is incorrect in stating the date of Lord George Gordon's retirement from the Navy as 1777 based on a letter to Lord Sandwich. The letter is dated 1777 but Gordon stopped his active service in 1772.
