William Kent, a Lieutenant, was in command of HMS Supply in 1796 when it sailed from New South Wales to the Cape. Early in 1797, at the Cape Kent acquired 13 sheep from the Merino flock of Mrs Gordon and shipped them back to NSW; 9 died on passage. The vessel was rotten and almost fell apart; it was condemned on arrival at Port Jackson. Kent was given much credit for suviving the voyage and also for contributing to the start of the Australian wool trade. Historical Records of NEw South Wales Volume 3 p 279
