A squadron of 9 ships and 2 frigates under de Cahideuc with which he was to reinforce the defenses of Louisbourg , Île Royale (Cape Breton Island).
Arrived in this port on June 19, he soon received the reinforcement of 5 ships and 1 frigate from Saint-Domingue under the orders of Joseph de Bauffremont to which were added 4 ships and 2 frigates from Toulon with Joseph-François de Noble du Revest.
Thanks to this successful concentration ( 18 ships and 5 frigates) , Dubois de La Motte was able to deploy in front of the citadel such a defense device that the English Squadron under the command of Francis Holburne did not dare to attack; it was dispersed by a storm on September 24.
But the lack of food and an epidemic of typhus prevented Dubois de La Motte from pursuing the English fleet and forced him to return to France.
Its activity had delayed the fall of Isle Royale by a year.
