London Gazette 1696, Whitehall Dec. 14 - Capt. Jumper of the Weymouth engaged the enemy, (being about 3 o'clock) and after a 2 or 3 hour broad-sides, the French man running (as the prisoners report) against a rock, struck his colours and yielded, and at half an hour past 5, sunk; she was a French Man of War called the Fougueux, had 48 guns mounted, of which the lower tier were brass, 2 in the hold and spare ports for 10 more; she was Commanded by the Chevalier of Am(or an)treville, and had 315 men on board, whom of 120 were saved, the rest being all drowned, together with the Commander, though we sent out all our boats to take them up.
