Turkish sources give two different values ​​for the length of the Mahmudiye galleon.

1- Istanbul Naval Museum Archive: 214,8 x 59,8 x 29,1
2- Naval Museum Catalog: 201,5 x 56 x 28

These lengths are calculated by our historians using the Grade value. The reason for all misunderstanding is to calculate with the wrong value. However, one of these lengths is the English foot. The second is the French foot. There are no errors in our historical records. There's a misunderstanding.

Mahmudiye (1828)

1 - Calculation of measurements given by the Naval History Archive in English foot:

Deck length: 214 feet 8 inches. (65.43 m).
Width: 59'8 ''. (18.19 m).
Depth of warehouse: 29 ft 1 inch (8.86 m). (Possibly immersion depth.)
Carrying capacity: 3387 tons.

2 - Calculating the measurements with the French foot in the Naval Museum catalog:

Deck length: 65.43 m (201 ft 5 in.).
Width: 56 ft. (18,19 m).
Depth of tank: 28 feet. (9.10 m).
Carrying capacity: 3389 tons.

3 - Now let's take a look at the measurements I calculated with my Zira based tonnage calculator:

Deck length: 65.49 m. (Length is determined by the formula.)
Ridge length: 54.52 m. (72 Zira).
Width: 18.19 m. (24 zira)
Depth of warehouse: 9.10 m. (12 zira)
Carrying capacity: 3393 tons.

In fact, the lengths specified in the documents are correct. Only these lengths are calculated incorrectly. As a result, the Mahmudiye galleon is a ship of 72 zira galleon and about 3400 tons.

Armament in 1829.

Lower Gun Deck: 34x11 okka (British 31 pounder) = 34 guns.
Medium Gun Deck: 2x18 Okka (British 50 pounder); 32x11 okka (British 31 pounder) = 34 Cannons.
Upper Gun Deck: 34x9 okka (British 25 pounder) = 34 guns.
Quarterdeck: 20x14 okka (British 40 Pounder carronade) = 20 Balls.
Head Kasara: 6x14 okka (English 40 Pounder carronade) = 6 Guns.

128 balls in total.

Staff:
1.230 (1832-33).
1.177 (1833-34).
1.276 (1835-36).

Oops! Early armament in my post below should read 2 brass 50-pounder guns, 66 brass 32-pounder guns, 34 brass 24-pounder guns and 26 brass 42-pounder carronades.
Visited in 1841 by the Surveyor of the British Navy, Sir William Symonds, who described it as ‘... a very fine ship,’ although heavily constructed (see James A. Sharp, 'Memoirs of the Life and Services of Rear-Admiral Sir William Symonds' London 1858).

Length of keel was 70 zira. Was to have been converted to screw in 1855 in England (to be 5835 tons displacement, 650 nominal horse-power and 120 guns) but its condition was not good enough for this work to be undertaken. Ordered broken up in December 1874 (see Idris Bostan 'Kürekli ve Yelkenli Osmanlı Gemileri' 2005).

Early armament was recorded as 2 brass 50-pounder guns, 100 brass 32-pounder guns and 26 brass 42-pounder carronades (see Report of 9 March 1832 on the Ottoman fleet by Captain Grey in UK National Archives FO 78/209). The mounting of brass guns suggests they were manufactured in Turkey and Captain Grey was therefore reporting approximate English equivalents rather than exact calibres.

I suspect designer and constructor here should be reversed. Kalfa and Efendi are Turkish titles so Ismail Kalfa = foreman Ismail while Mehmet Efendi = gentleman Mehmet. As you might already known, Turkish society used given names only at this time so individuals were identified by rank, etc. Regards, John
