Admiralty-Office, February 1.
His Majesty's Ships the Romney ,Rainbow , and Amazon, cruizing in the Soundings, on the 23d of last month, fell in with and took the Count de Noailles Privateer of 16 guns, belonging to Granville. And 2 days afterwards the Romney and Amazon, being in company, met with and took the Geraldus, a French East India Ship of about 400 Tons, laden with provisions, bound from Port L'Orient to India. She came out with 2 other East India Ships, but sailed so bad that she lost company with them, and was returning back to Port L'Orient. The prize is come into Plymouth.

Jacques Vichot, /Répertoire des navires de guerre français/, extends his coverage of "navires de guerre" "non seulement à tous les navires qui ont figuré sur les listes de la Flotte, mais à tous ceux wui ont participé à une action de guerre" {my understanding: "no only to all the vessels that have appeared on lists of the fleet (navy), but to all those what have participated in a wartime action (battle)"]. Vichot includes many privateers. Ships are arranged alphabetically and there is no entry for "Comte de Noailles," "Comtesse de Noailles," or "Noailles." Perhaps Vichot did not notice the action between Blandford and "Comte de Noailles." There should be records at Granville, or from Granville, about privateers based there: besides having a letter of marque, a privateer had to file a role d'équipage listing everyone in the crew by name, for the information of the Inscription maritime or sailors registry. There is no guarantee that the records have survived lo these 277 years.

Vichot's list does include a West Indian privateer of 1798 named "le Zombi"!

You are welcome to add comments, but THree Decks is comprehensive, not complete. I doubt it ever will be. It is entirely possible that this ship will be added though.

As to editing, this is not a wiki site, editors are so by personal invite only. If you are interested email me using the email on the home page and let me know why you would like to do so.

I don't know how to access French Archives. If not the same ship, it is a different ship that is not in 3 Decks, and the Bristol Privateer Blandford is also not listed. Do I just make comments to add ships that are not listed. I used to know how to edit or add but it has been too long

Sorry, the April date wasn't clearly stated as 1748 so I misread it. In which case I have no idea. It's possible, you would need to trace its ownership and history in the French archives to be certain. If they still exist.

My comment states that the Comte de Noailles was retaken by the french privateers grand Granoth and Deux Couronnes 6 days after capture by the Blandford in Aprol 1747. the Amazon captured her in January 1748. Respectfully, JM

Seems unlikely, this one was taken in January, not April, by the Amazon.

Was this French privateer the same as taken by the Bristol privateer Blandford "Letter of Marque Declaration 27th February, 1747, by Captain James Seix. Early in April the Blandford took the privateer Comte de Noailles, of 22 guns and 240 men, after a stout resistance, in which the latter lost 37 killed and 39 wounded, the Blandford having 4 killed and 22 wounded. Six days afterwards on her way to Bristol with the prize “she fell in with the Grand Granoth of Granville, 40 guns and 480 men, which engaged the Blandford for four hours, during which time the prize gave no assistance, and the Deux Couronnes of St. Malo, 24 nine and six-pounders with 280 men, coming down, she endeavoured to escape, but being so shattered in her rigging and sails, the Deux Couronnes soon came up with her, and as Captain Seix’s people were quite tired, the best of his people aboard the prize and 159 prisoners aboard his own ship, the Blandford was obliged to strike to superior force.” Her prize was also retaken."
