Telemachus Cutter, Spithead, July 25, 1797

SIR, I have the honor to inform you, that yesterday, at half past 2 o'Clock A.M. off Cape La Hogue, His Majesty's Cutter under my command captured Le Hardi, a French Lugger Privateer, mounting 4 carriage guns, small arms, &c and manned with 30 men; she had been out from Cherbourg about 5 hours, and had not taken any thing, and I have the pleasure to add, that I retook 2 Merchant Brigs the same day, that had been captured by a French Privateer.

I have the honor to be, &c. &c. &c.

THOMAS NEWTON.
