In the time the Saint-Esprit was launched, a 74-gun ship of the line was a second rate (more accurately : second order of the second rate) in the French navy. See : Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau, Élémen[t]s de l'architecture navale : ou, Traité pratique de la construction des vaisseaux, Paris, Joubert, 1752, p. 5 (« On a coûtume de diſtinguer les Vaiſſeaux de différentes grandeurs par des claſſes qu'on appelle rang ; les plus gros ſont du premier rang & les plus petits ſont du troiſieme ; paſſé ce terme ce ſont des Frégates , qu'on diſtingue par le nombre des canons qu'elles portent : les plus petites s'appellent des corvettes. Outre la diſtinction des Vaiſſeaux par rang , on diviſe encore chaque rang en deux claſſes qu'on nomme ordre : ainſi on dit des Vaiſſeaux du premier rang , premier ordre ») and p. 17 (first rate, first order : from 110 to 120 guns ; first rate, second order : from 92 to 108 guns ; second rate, second order : from 76 to 90 guns ; second rate, second order : from 62 to 74 guns ; third rate, first order : from 52 to 60 guns ; third rate, second order : 48 or 50 guns ; from 20 to 46 guns : frigates ; 20 or less : corvettes).
