The French Navy then nearly never used burthen («jauge», in French), which was measured almost without exception for merchant ships only. The French formula for estimating burthen was then: (lenght of deck) × (breadth without outside planking) × (depth to deck) ÷ 100, or, here, 153 × 40⅔ × 20 ÷ 100 ≈ 1,244 «tonneaux de jauge».

1,100 was the deadweight a 64 line-of-battle ship of the «Marine royale» then had to bear, in tons of 2,000 French pounds ≈ 979 ㎏. The deadweight was, when considering ships of the line, some one half of their displacement, the other half being the weight of her hull.

So, le Bizarre had a displacement of some 2,200 French tons, a deadweight of some 1,100 French tons, and a burthen of 1,244 tons according to French measurements (or some 1,490 in English tons).
