On 12 November, 1745, when blowing hard, the Duke of Bedford being alongside, the Boscawen’s main yard came down on deck, through the carrying away of the strop of a jeer-block. Although there were sixty men on the yard, and the starboard yard-arm went well into the sea, not a man was hurt or drowned.
