Two French line of battle ships have returned to Bantry Bay in a most disabled state, one with the loss of her rudder, and the other of her bowsprit, where it is probable they must remain if they are not better supplied with provisions than the Suffrein, armed en flute, which has been taken. Another line of battle ship has been seen entirely dismasted. L’Impatientie frigate of 44 guns, 400 men and 250 troops, struck upon a rock a few leagues from Crookhaven, is lost, and only the pilot and six men saved. She was a new frigate, never at sea before, carried 24-pounders, and was a model of La Pomone, Sir J Borlase Warren’s ship. [Hampshire Chronicle,7 January 1797]
