I have a copy of a document penned by Commander John Brown "on board his Majesty's Ship Leviathan) July 1, 1779 instructing Mr. William Tellett, Master of the Brigg James, how to signal in a fog and also at night. The brigg (private, I assume?)was part of a fleet being assembled. I am looking for information about my ancestor William Tellett (from British Honduras) and his part in that fleet. Any information about the British use of private briggs would be appreciated.

The Edinburgh Advertiser March 21, 1780

This day, at half past one o'clock and express arrived from Portsmouth with an account of his Majesty's ships the Leviathan, Captain Lampert, and the Charon, the Hon. Capt. Luttrell, with the fleet from Jamaica, bound to London, having past the Isle of Wight in their way for the Downs, all well.
