She is caught in a violent storm off the coast of Sardinia and her commander decides to pass through the mouths of Bonifacio , to the Lavezzi Islands , in an area of breakers and reefs . Pushed by a southerly gust , she struck a rocky shoal marked by a buoy at an estimated speed of 12 knots . Crushed by the shock , it sank to the bottom during the night of February 15 to 16, 1855 , lost body and goods .
Victims : from 700 to 750 , only Captain Jugan and the chaplain Carriere are identified .
The study of this storm and this shipwreck was the founding act in the creation of the first meteorological bulletins .
