Portsmouth 10 January 1802: The Walmer Castle, Canton, and Thames, outward-bound East Indiaman, that arrived here on Friday, have taken in 350 recruits from Cowes. The above ships are estimated amongst the finest in the Company’s service. Two hundred and fifty more recruits are to embark on board them to-morrow forenoon. Seven men belonging to the Thames ran away with the boat, came on shore, and immediately absconded. Three of them have been since taken, and conveyed on board he above ship. Yesterday a Court of Directors was held at the India House. The following ships are ordered to be afloat the 6th of next month, and every exertion is to be usd to forward their departure from England, viz, the first fleet, consisting of the Canton, a new ship shortly to be launched; and the Thames, for Bombay and China, and the Arniston, for St Helena, Bencoolen and China. Captain Campbell Marjoribanks of the latter ship, was sworn into the command. [London Courier, 16 October 1801]
