Aris's Birmingham Gazette of Monday 26 November 1744 gives details of a French privateer attacking the Concord of Fraserburgh, which fled into Montrose harbour. The Concord's master is named as Alexander Hill in one newspaper account, and 'Gill' in a second. The Concord was then cut out by a boat and crew from the unnamed French vessel, leaving the ship's master to complain bitterly about the performance of the soldiers in Montrose.

According to the newspaper accounts, HMS Hector, under Captain Lake, was dispatched north to seek out the privateer, and closed with her off Arbroath. The privateer struck after an hour, with many casualties, and 140 prisoners were reported to have been taken to Edinburgh.
