In action with the Algerian Golden Horse
BWAS-1603Sir John Narborough, the Plymouth. He seized 2 Algiers ships of war. The Sapphire came up with the Golden Lyon of Algiers, exchanged shot and the captain and several men were wounded, the master and 4 or 5 others were killed. Had not the Pearl been near she would have been lost. The ships are undermanned and the seamen bad. Captain Harman died of his wounds, he has put Lieutenant Cloudesley in command and his mate as master. There are no provisions at Tangier, no boatswain's, gunner's or carpenter's stores and if Mr. Shears did not help, it is impossible to fit out the Sapphire. He reports meeting with several Algerian ships of war which ran from him and fears they will take our merchant ships. The Portland, Newcastle, fire ships and sloops have not arrived. He hopes Sir Denis Gauden will supply provisions and his agent with money for pursers to fit ships and the surgeons to provide for sick and wounded.
