London, 29 January 1750: Extract of a letter from the Seahorse in Cadiz Bay, Dec 30 -
A melancholy accident happened to us on Christmas Day last; our Gunner, a very worthy, sensible gentleman, and our Surgeon’s two Mates, were drowned; after dinner they had got into a small boat, with an intention to visit St Rock, but the Spanish officer not permitting them land, they were returning on board, and were very nigh the ship, when, in putting the boat about, they forgot to remove from the windward-side to the leeward, which occasioned her filling with water, and oversetting. The Gunner, Mr Holbrook, and Surgeon’s Mate, Mr Ganelly, were soon taken up, and buried at Gibraltar; the body of the other Mate, Mr Young, could not be found. The Gunner lost his life in saving his son’s, a lad of about 13 years of age, who was in the boat with him. There were two others in the boat, who saved themselves by swimming; the one of them a young gentleman, son to Mr Smith, a timber-merchant at Lambeth; the other one of the Captain’s servants. Captain Barrington has taken care of the Gunner’s son, and I believe will be a father to him: it was through his recommendation the Gunner was provided for, for whim he had a just regard, and who was justly beloved and esteemed by all good men to whom he was known. [Kentish Post, 31 January 1750]

Gibraltar, 6 December 1750: The new Alcaide of Tetuan having received the Emperor of Morocco’s credential letters for carrying into execution the agreement made between William Pettigrew, Esq; his Majesty’s Consul General, and the late Alcaide of Tetuan, for the redemption of all his Britannick Majesty’s subjects who are there in captivity, Captain Barrington in the Sea Horse man of war, will sail to morrow morning for Tetuan Bay, in order to take on board the said captives. [Stamford Mercury, 12 January 1751]

Gibraltar, December 1750: Captain Barrington, in the Sea Horse man of war, who sailed from hence on the 7th Instant in the morning for Tetuan Bay, in order to bring over the British slaves, is returned hither this morning, and has brought with him Mr Latton and 27 captives. [Stamford Mercury, 12 January 1751]
