6.2.1787Letter of 6th February reported by the Times
"This day his Majesty's sloop the Termagant, commanded by the Hon. J Bultrel, who has been cruising in the North seas after some well-known smugglers, brought into this port a very large vessel, commanded by one of the most intrepid fellows in that clandestine employ, (his name is not yet made public) who, after a full hour's conflict, was obliged to strike to superior weight of metal. Ten of his hands were killed, and five mortally wounded, whom the officers of his Majesty's ship have humanely sent on shore to their sick quarters, along with several of their own valiant fellows. She had on board 800 kegs of spirits, and 200 pound-bags of tea, which are now delivery into his Majesty's warehouse.' ..."
