We are concerned to learn, that a great proportion of our loss on board our ships in the glorious battle off Copenhagen, was occasioned by the bursting of guns. No less than seven burst in our squadron during the battle, two on board the Monarch, and the other five on board different ships, by which many of our brave men were killed and wounded. Sheerness, 3 February 1772: The Grafton, of 74 guns; and the Monarch and Magnificent, of 70 guns each, are just got under way for the Nore: they are going round to Portsmouth under the command of Capt Collier in the Flora. Every body here wonders at the Admiralty’s sending round three such fine new ships at this dangerous season of the year, and through a very hazardous passage of sands, shoals, and rocks. For sale by the candle at the London Tavern, in Plymouth, on Wednesday, the 20th of September 1780, the good ship, Le Marguerite, an extraordinary fine sailer, square stern, built at Nantz, about four years since, burthen 450 tons, more or less, is a remarkably well-built vessel… she was taken on her passage from St Domingo to France by his Majesty’s ship Monarch, Adam Duncan, Esq, commander, in sight of the fleet under Admiral Geary, but afterwards retaken by the Duc d’Artois, French private ship of war of 64 guns, and lately retaken by his Majesty’ ship Bienfaisant, John Macbride, Esq, commander, who brought her into the port of Plymouth, by his Majesty’s ship Alfred, William Bayne, Esq, commander in sight of the fleet under Admiral Geary; now lying at Plymouth, where she now lies to be delivered to the purchaser.
