On board the Dart sloop of war now in dock at Portsmouth repairing, an experiment of a gun on Gen Benthem’s, or, as it is also termed, Sadler’s, principle, was tried some days since, and found to answer to admiration. The piece was discharged as fast as it could be loaded, and eleven times more rapid than a gun on the ordinary construction could be fired. It throws two balls nearly a third greater distance than the common carronades throw one, and in a good direction. [Hampshire Chronicle, 11 November 1797]
