The following ships are now getting ready in Chatham dock yard, the Bellona of 74, Atlas of 90, Diadem of 64, Leander of 50, Dolphin of 44, and the Amphion frigate of 32 guns. The shipwrights work two tide extra. [Exeter Flying Post, 7 January 1780]

Portsmouth, 19 October 1799: Monday last, pursuant to an order from the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, a Court Martial was held on board His Majesty’s ship Gladiator, on William Moore, a seaman belonging to the Diadem, of 64 guns, Captain Dawson, for having declared that if every man was of his mind, they would drag Lieutenants Rowe and Dyer out of their cabins and murder them, and for uttering other mutinous expressions. The charges being proved, the prisoner was sentenced by the court to receive 200 lashes on board of, and alongside such ships as the Commander in Chief should direct; to be mulcted of his pay, and to two years solitary confinement in the Marshalsea. Portsmouth, 19 October 1799: Wednesday a Court Martial was held on board the Gladiator, , on Robert Nelson, quarter-master of his Majesty’s ship Diadem, for mutinous expressions. He was acquitted.
Also William Sheard, John Moore, Henry Jones, and John Porteus, seamen of the same ship, for writing a letter, containing false charges, against Capt Dawson, and the officers of the Diadem, and other mutinous conduct. Jones and Porteus were found guilty. The latter, being writer of the letter, was sentenced to receive one hundred lashes from ship to ship, and be imprisoned one year in solitary confinement in the Marshalsea. Jones is to have fifty lashes in his own ship. Sheard and Moore were acquitted. [Hampshire Telegraph, 21 October 1799]

A Spanish privateer, the Conception schooner, has been captured, and sent into Falmouth, by his Majesty’s ship the Diadem, Captain Towry. [Hampshire Chronicle, 8 April 1797]

My ancestor, John Wightman, served as Assistant Carpenter on Diadem between 16/12/1804 and 5/3/1806. He was at the capture of Volontaire, and transferred to Volontaire, promoted to Carpenter.
