London, 8 June 1765: Letters received at Bristol from Senegal advise, that the Hound sloop of war had been dispatched by Commodore Graves to inspect into what the French are doing at Cape Verd; an account having been receiv’d that they had built several houses, erected a fortification, and in all appearance would soon have a very flourishing settlement there, as that part of the African coast, abounds with ebony, gums, ivory, and other valuable articles of commerce. St James’s, 15 February 1772: By his Majesty’s ship Florida, arrived at Spithead, a letter has been received from Capt Burr, of his Majesty’s sloop the Hound, dated at Port Egmont in Falkland’s Island, the 10th of November last, giving an account that, in the preceding month, two Spanish vessels had arrived there with such artillery, stores, &c, which could not be restored to Capt Stott at the surrender of the island,: and that a Spanish Commissary, appointed for the purpose, had delivered them to Captain Burr, with the greatest punctuality and exactness. London, 4 October 1748: This week Capt Dove, Commander of his Majesty’s sloop the Hound, took a smuggling cutter on the coast of Suffolk, laden with tea and brandy to the value of £2000 and has put some of the smugglers into irons for their better security. [Kentish Post, 8 October 1748]

Virginia, 25 July 1748: Extract of letter from Captain Ballet, commander of a sloop of war cruizing at Virginia-
Having hove down and cleaned, we sailed upon a cruise, and retuned to Virginia in a fortnight, in which time we took two Spanish privateers and retook three merchant ships which they had taken. We likewise took three French flags of truce which were on a clandestine trade. The French and Spanish ships are condemned. The Captain’s share amounts to upwards of three thousand pounds, beside head-money for the privateers. On board one of the French ships there were found tree thousand dollars to purchase provisions with. The Government of Philadelphia has made Captain Ballet a present of £100 for his great care in protecting their trade; and the Governor of Virginia has ordered a piece of plat e to be presented to him, for his signal services in taking the enemy’s privateers, and rescuing their merchant ships.
